In sports like soccer and touch football, selection for the Broken Bay team is determined through gala days specific to each sport. Meanwhile, sports such as netball and rugby league conduct their own trials for students who wish to compete for the Broken Bay team.

For cross country, athletics, and swimming, progression begins at the Mater Maria carnival, leading to the Broken Bay carnival. Exceptional performers there have the opportunity to qualify for the Broken Bay team to compete at the CCC championships, and potentially advance to NSW and School Sports Australia levels.
